The Hay Review Part 1

As hay should make up 90% of a piggy diet me has decided to review the brands available to me. Hay is also good for bedding so me will give it a bedding rating as well.

Due to the snow, Mummy had been unable to get out to the pet shop to get my hay.

We nearly ran out so she had to order some online from Tesco who were also delivering the human food. (Tesco were brave enough to come out in the snow Mummy not)

Mummy got us a bag of Tesco Value Hay it cost £3.57 for 1.5kg

The hay is yellow in colour and cut into short strands (me prefers long strands me can munch all the way up)

This was soft hay so good for sleeping on, me wasnt as keen on eating it, but it was not that bad about 5 out of 10 rating from me.

Mummy also thinks the price was high for a Value hay.

Better for sleeping than eating!!

Does any other pig have a comment about Tesco Value Hay feel free to add it.

Silly Book

Mummy has found an old guinea pig care book from the seventies, it is very silly.

Because you are not allowed to copy what is says me is quoting, the book is called Pet Library Enjoy Series Enjoy your Guinea Pig.

My favourite quotes are "Cavies do not climb, jump or gnaw on wood"
"The Cavy is not known for its intelligence but for its affection"

Me nearly wet myself me was laughing so hard.

Me thinks these piggies must have been super heroes at undercover work,  the poor humans never suspected anything...

Any of you guys found silly books?

Goodbye Dear Alge

It is with a heavy heart that I write to say goodbye to another special human friend Alge.

Me never met Alge me only knew her virtually and yet she still managed to find a place in my heart.

In the short time me knew her (about 2.5 years) Alge has been Mummy to the legendary Jolly Rodents Charlie and Chester who have no doubt greeted her at the rainbow bridge, and the irrepressible Pirate Piggies Captain Jack Sparrow the 2nd and Barnacle Bill sadly left behind.

Alge was a great contributor of funny stories to virtual events, kind words in times of need and good advise when us piggies were under the weather.

Most of all she gave us unconditional friendship.

Me knows we are not alone in missing her presence and so we hope that all Alges friends furry and human will join us in lighting a candle all around the world and wishing Alge well on her final journey.

We would also like to send our love to the family she left behind, whose grief will be so much more than ours.

Goodbye Alge, thank you for the years of memories and friendship you shared with us.

Guests Number 15

This time to confuse you we have a group of guinea pig girls who will be known as Charlies Angels.

They are all rescue piggies living together along with their brothers in New York. (we think this is New York State not the Big Apple)

You cant live in a big apple anyway, silly idea it would get eaten.

Their real names have a festive feel to them.

Me is sure you can guess who they are........

Agent Cannonball Goes Live

Me thought me was a master of mind control getting Daddy to set us up on the Wii, but Cannonball is a true master.

He has convinced his Mummy to give him his own TV station here is the link!

He has to share it with his brothers (me knows all about that!!)

Me is so impressed with this that me has added the link to my blogroll at the bottom right hand side of side bar, its called Guinea pigs on Ustream.

Mind you he still needs to do some more mind controlling as me has clicked and found the station (shock horror) offline!!!

Keep working on it Agent Cannonball.

[caption id="attachment_628" align="aligncenter" width="191" caption="Happy Valentines Day"][/caption]

Valentines day is a day for showing your love to someone close to you, originally Saint Valentines day after many saints called Valentine (who would have guessed that) traditional cards, flowers or chocolates are exchanged with loved ones.

Do other piggies around the world celebrate Valentines Day?

Me Knew He Wasnt A Guinea Pig

Mummy has now decided that Ghost is not an Agouti or an Argente she has now decided he is a Silver Chinchilla.

Me told you he wasnt very piggy like, oh a silver chinchilla is a breed of piggy hmmmm.

Ok here is what me has found out about silver Chinchillas.

They are an Agouti fox, the undercolour is grey and the ticking is white (longer than normal ticking) they should have white eye circles, and a white belly, dark ruby eyes and dark grey ears.

Well that description does match Ghost exactly so maybe Mummy is right this time.

Ghost still has that side patch though, so he is not show quality, so there!!!

The Importance of Eating Hay

Hay should make up about 80% of a guinea pigs diet.

Hay is essential to make our piggy toothies "work", because they are constantly growing our toothies need to be worn down to prevent them over growing, because hay is tough and requires lots of chewing it wears toothies down nicely.

The Guineapigalopaedia recommends that hay should be at least 3 months old to allow for drying yet still slightly green, me has no idea how you tell how old your hay is.

Hay should be dry and free from dust and mould and fresh smelling.

Hay should be stored in a cool dry place off the floor, Mummy keeps ours in the garage.

The indigestible fibres in hay help keep your tummy working properly (Mummy says the human equivalent would be something like All Bran)

The best hays for eating are Timothy hay and Meadow hay.

For young, pregnant, nursing or ill piggies Alfalfa hay can be helpful. This should not be fed to healthy adult piggies due to high calcium and protein content. Small quanties as a supplement should be ok but not as main food.

The best hay for bedding is soft hay as opposed to stalky hay which can poke you.

Green hay has more minerals and Vitamin A and E.

Brown hay has more Vitamin D from being in sun longer but has less good stuff in it.

Check out Galens Garden Hay section for lots of information.

He wasnt clever he was under my control heehee

We like mario karts best.

My mii made Daddy crash when he was racing.

The fun a pig can have.......

We have avoided the wii fit!!!

Daring Dalmation

Agent 101 is a Dalmation, although there are breed standards for Dalmation we think they must be quiet rare as they have what is known as the fatal gene.

Dalmations and Roans should never be bred with another Dalmation or Roan as this causes horrible birth defects, this is because the gene for the Dalmation/ Roan coat is recessive.

Dalmations and Roans are genetically the same but the colour markings vary.

Many countries dont recognise Dalmations as a show breed.

Dalmations have white hair with coloured spots, feet and head, although the head has a central white blaze along the nose.

The official colours for a Dalmation are Self, Agouti and Argente.

To breed a Dalmation you need a piggy of your chosen colour and a Dalmation, the litter will always contain one self.

Agent 101 was a surplus boar from a litter, we are sure he much prefers his new home.

Agent 101 is a master of mind control he only needs to think of carrots and his Mummy runs to get them for him

Here he is with his best friend Agent Thorntons
